The buyer’s guide.

What size powder coating oven do I need?

Measure your longest part, then size up if you are close. Interior dimensions on every oven page are the usable space inside the box, not the outside, so what you measure is what fits. If a part almost fits, go one size larger. It is far cheaper than buying a second oven later.

The size ladder runs from a benchtop 2x2x2 up through the 5- and 6-foot ovens. Tall, narrow parts usually point to a taller, narrower oven, and wide parts point to a wider one. When in doubt, tell us your parts on the phone and we will size it with you.

What are the electrical requirements? What breaker and power do I need?

Silverback ovens run on 240V single phase, which is the standard heavy shop or garage circuit, so most shops already have the power they need. The breaker size depends on the model, and every oven’s page prints its exact breaker and plug in plain text. The benchtop 2x2x2 needs a 20-amp double-pole breaker; most single- and two-element ovens need 30 amps; the largest models need 50 amps.

Every oven ships fully wired with its power cord and matching outlet, so there is no hardwiring. Send your electrician the spec block on the oven’s page.

Should I build my own oven, or buy one?

You can build one, and on materials alone a home build can come out cheaper. The real cost is time and business risk. The weekends spent cutting, sealing, and wiring are weekends not spent coating paid work, and a home build is not engineered, tested, or warrantied. A Silverback oven shows up in 5 to 7 business days, wired and ready, with a 2-year parts warranty behind it.

If you are set on building, we sell the parts too, including the PID controller, which is the genuinely hard piece to source. Our standalone control boxes ship prewired and ready to attach to a build.

How does shipping, freight, and lead time work?

Your oven ships in 5 to 7 business days on LTL freight, packaged on a custom pallet, wrapped in plastic and strapped, with 48-inch plywood protective skirting around it. Transit is usually another 3 to 5 days after it ships. We pass on the freight price the carrier sets, with no markup. Most orders land between $300 and $400 anywhere in the country. To see your number, add the oven to your cart and continue to checkout.

What drives your price is weight, size, how far you are from our Illinois shop, whether the address is a home or a business, and whether the truck needs a liftgate. Two charges are added only when they apply: $70 for residential delivery and $70 for a liftgate if you have no dock or forklift. Remote, hard-to-reach addresses can quote high, so if you ever see a number over $700, call us at 314-202-4027 and we will check the details behind it. When your oven arrives, inspect it before you sign. If there is major damage, refuse the shipment and we will handle the freight claim, then repair or replace and reship. The full ballpark ranges by size and region are on the Shipping & Delivery page.

What comes standard with a Silverback oven?

Every oven arrives ready to run, no extra parts to buy. Standard equipment includes the power cord and matching outlet and the 48-inch plywood protective skirting that protects it in transit. On our standard oven line, a 6-inch R-30 rockwool top (R-30 is the insulation rating; higher means better heat retention) and the stay-cool control box come standard.

The oven ships fully wired, tested, and pre-programmed before it leaves our Illinois shop. A 2-year parts warranty and lifetime phone support are included at no upcharge. Add-ons like a blower fan, larger windows, or a PID controller upgrade are optional, so you only pay for what your work needs.

What warranty and support do I get?

A 2-year parts warranty comes standard on Silverback ovens and booths, baked into the price with no upcharge. You also get lifetime phone support: call us for as long as you own your oven and we will walk you through setup, programming, or repairs by phone, no matter when you bought. When a part is covered, you mail the broken part back and we send the replacement.

For returns and cancellations: cancel within 24 hours for a full refund. After that a 20% restocking fee applies. Returns within 30 days of receiving your order carry a 20% restocking fee, you cover return shipping, and the item must be in original condition.

What is Ramp and Soak, and which PID controller do I need?

Ramp and Soak is a way to program the oven to move to a set temperature at a controlled pace, hold it for a set time, then move to the next step, so you can run multi-step temperature profiles instead of a single hold. Most buyers do not need it. Every oven comes standard with a digital PID controller (it holds your set temperature automatically) and a timer, which handles a normal cure fine.

There are three levels. The standard digital PID (included) sets a temperature and a timer. The Bluetooth Ramp & Soak upgrade (+$159) adds multi-step profiles plus phone-app programming in plain menus. The Touchscreen controller (+$399) is the top tier, with a full touchscreen interface.

What temperature does a Silverback oven reach? Can it cure Cerakote?

Silverback ovens cure up to 500°F. Most powders cure in about 10 to 15 minutes at 350 to 400°F, though every powder has its own time and temperature, so always follow the manufacturer’s spec sheet for your product. Cerakote and similar finishes run hotter, usually around 450 to 500°F, and the oven reaches those temperatures too.

One thing buyers ask about: before each oven leaves our shop we power it on, run every function, and pre-program the controller at 350°F with a 10-minute timer as a functional test. That 350°F test confirms the oven works. It is not the oven’s maximum.
